Storm Activity in the Caribbean Continues to Threaten Popular Destinations Like the BVI, While San Blas Remains Calm: What Travelers Need to Know

The National Hurricane Center (NOAA) is currently monitoring multiple storm systems across the Atlantic, creating much uncertainty for travelers heading to popular sailing destinations like the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the Bahamas. Another storm threatens the BVI, adding to ongoing concerns for charter operators and travelers in the region.

Meteorologist Jean Suriel reports that a new atmospheric system is developing in the Eastern Atlantic, with a trajectory similar to Hurricane Erin. Within the next 72 hours, it has a chance of developing into a tropical depression and may strengthen into Tropical Storm Fernand, potentially becoming the sixth cyclone of the season.

  • As we mentioned in our last post "Hurricane Erin Cancels BVI Charters", Hurricane Erin has just passed through the northwestern Atlantic, leaving behind unstable conditions in nearby regions.

  • A second system near the Leeward Islands shows a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression this week, with a projected path right over major Caribbean sailing hubs such as the BVI, raising serious concerns for charter operators and travelers.

  • A third disturbance in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic (AL99), located west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, is also showing signs of organization. While not yet fully developed, forecasts give it a 40% chance of strengthening within the next seven days, making it another potential storm to watch.

Suriel also notes that prediction models differ: the GFS model forecasts a potential direct impact on the Dominican Republic, while the European model shows the system north of Puerto Rico. These variations highlight the uncertainty and the need for travelers to monitor updates closely.

With two active threats and a third system building behind them, the situation highlights the fragile reality of booking sailing vacations in hurricane-prone regions during this season. Travelers face the risk of charter cancellations, itinerary disruptions, and safety hazards—factors that can turn a dream vacation into a stressful experience.
