Why a Weak US Dollar Can Make a San Blas Catamaran Charter Better Value in 2026

Panama is one of the few destinations in Latin America where the US dollar is used for almost everything. For international visitors, that means the cost of a Panama vacation can change considerably—even when the published price in dollars remains exactly the same.

When the US dollar weakens against your home currency, every dollar-priced part of the trip becomes less expensive: the catamaran charter, transfers, hotels in Panama City, restaurant meals and local flights. On a substantial purchase such as a private, fully crewed catamaran charter, a favorable exchange rate can save a family or group thousands in their own currency.

The opportunity is not identical for everyone. European, British, Brazilian, Swiss, Australian, Mexican and Colombian travelers have recently seen meaningful advantages compared with periods when the dollar was particularly strong. The benefit for Canadian travelers is currently more modest, while US travelers experience no direct exchange-rate saving.

So, how much difference can the currency really make—and what should you include when calculating the complete cost of a San Blas vacation?

Why the Dollar Matters in Panama

Panama’s official currency is the balboa, but it is fixed at parity with the US dollar, and US banknotes are used throughout the country. Our private catamaran charters, domestic transfers and most tourism services are therefore priced in US dollars.

Panama City
Panama City

For an American guest, a US$15,000 trip always costs US$15,000. For a traveler earning euros, pounds, Brazilian reais or Canadian dollars, the final cost depends on the exchange rate when the payment is made.

This is important because the dollar remains below its exceptional 2022 high when measured against a broad group of currencies. In late August 2026, the WSJ Dollar Index was approximately 9% below its September 2022 record. However, exchange rates move independently, so the only comparison that matters to an individual traveler is the dollar against their own currency.

What a US$15,000 San Blas Charter Costs in Different Currencies

The table below uses a US$15,000 trip as a simple illustration. That could represent a five-night private charter for a family or small group, together with transfers, one or two nights in Panama City and some additional expenses.

Each “strong-dollar” comparison uses a recent period when the dollar was especially expensive against that particular currency. These reference dates are not identical and some were brief market peaks; they are included to demonstrate the scale of the currency effect, not to promise a future exchange rate.

Rates are rounded mid-market indications checked on August 28, 2026. Banks, cards and payment providers normally add a margin or fee. Exchange rates change continuously, so always request a current conversion before making a payment.

The Advantage for European Travelers

The difference is particularly clear for guests from euro countries such as Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

In September 2022, the euro briefly fell to approximately US$0.96. At that rate, a US$15,000 vacation cost around €15,625. With the euro at approximately US$1.164 in late August 2026, the same dollar price is about €12,883—a difference of roughly €2,742.

That saving can cover a significant part of the international airfare, private flights between Panama City and San Blas, gratuities or an upgrade to a larger catamaran. It can also make a private crewed charter competitive with a luxury Caribbean resort once meals, activities and accommodation are considered together.

The European Central Bank’s reference rate was €1 = US$1.1643 on August 28, 2026. By comparison, the euro reached approximately US$0.96 in September 2022 during the dollar’s exceptional surge.

The Advantage for British Travelers

British guests currently see one of the largest differences compared with the strong-dollar period of 2022.

Sterling fell as low as approximately US$1.035 in September 2022. At that exchange rate, a US$15,000 trip required about £14,490. At approximately US$1.353 per pound in August 2026, the same trip costs around £11,086—about £3,404 less.

For a family or group looking at a private Caribbean charter, this is not a marginal change. It can materially alter which catamaran, trip length or transfer option fits the budget.

Historical data places sterling’s 2022 low near US$1.035 per pound, while the late-August 2026 rate was approximately US$1.353.

What It Means for Brazilian Travelers

Brazil is one of the most relevant markets because the difference between a strong and weak dollar becomes very visible in reais.

At the brief December 2024 dollar peak of approximately R$6.75, a US$15,000 vacation represented around R$101,250. At approximately R$5.19 per dollar in August 2026, the same US$15,000 represents about R$77,786—a difference of more than R$23,000.

Even without comparing the absolute market peak, a stronger real makes every dollar-priced element of the trip more accessible. This matters for larger Brazilian families and groups because the charter is priced primarily around the boat, the number of guests and the number of nights—not as four or five separate hotel rooms.

The Brazilian real has experienced considerable volatility, so timing and payment method matter. The rate was approximately R$5.19 per dollar on August 28, 2026, compared with a brief high near R$6.75 per dollar in December 2024.

What It Means for Canadian Travelers

Canadian travelers should be more cautious with the “weak dollar” headline. The US dollar may be weaker against a broad basket of currencies, but the Canadian dollar has not strengthened as dramatically.

At approximately C$1.390 per US dollar in August 2026, a US$15,000 trip costs about C$20,857. At the brief February 2025 level of C$1.479, it would have cost around C$22,190. The improvement is about C$1,333, or 6%.

That is still useful—it could cover road transfers for a group and part of the gratuity—but it is smaller than the advantage currently available to British, Brazilian or euro-area travelers. Current USD/CAD market rates can be checked using a reputable currency history service; the Canadian dollar briefly reached a 22-year low around C$1.479 per US dollar in February 2025.

Other Countries with a Meaningful Currency Advantage

Switzerland

The Swiss franc remains a strong travel currency. A US$15,000 trip is approximately CHF12,140 at an exchange rate near CHF0.809 per dollar, compared with around CHF15,225 near the dollar’s October 2022 high against the franc. This makes Panama particularly attractive for Swiss travelers comparing it with other premium long-haul destinations.

Australia

The Australian dollar traded around US$0.716 in late August 2026, versus below US$0.62 during the strong-dollar period of October 2022. On a US$15,000 trip, that represents a difference of approximately A$3,247. International flights from Australia remain a major expense, but the cost after arriving in Panama is now more favorable than it was during the 2022 low.

Mexico

Mexico is currently one of the clearest regional examples. The peso strengthened from expectations and levels around MX$21 per dollar in early 2025 to approximately MX$17 in August 2026. A US$15,000 trip therefore falls from around MX$315,000 to approximately MX$255,500. The Mexican peso’s near-20% rise since early 2025 has been widely described as the return of the “super peso.”

Colombia

Panama is close and easy to reach from Colombia, and the Colombian peso has also strengthened considerably. At approximately COP3,211 per dollar, a US$15,000 trip costs about COP48.2 million. At roughly COP4,129 per dollar in August 2025, it would have cost approximately COP61.9 million. That difference is especially relevant because flights from Bogotá or Medellín to Panama City can be relatively short and competitively priced.

United States

American travelers receive no direct currency discount because both their income and the trip are denominated in dollars. However, Panama can become more competitive relative to Europe, the UK and destinations using currencies that have strengthened against the dollar. The simplicity of dollar pricing also removes foreign-exchange uncertainty for US guests.

Argentina, Chile and Other Latin American Markets

A globally weaker dollar does not automatically mean that every Latin American currency is stronger. Inflation, local interest rates and political conditions can dominate the exchange rate. Travelers from Argentina and other highly volatile currency markets should compare the live rate and the actual cost of accessing dollars rather than relying on a broad dollar index.

Typical Expenses for a Private San Blas Catamaran Vacation

The charter is the largest expense, but it is not the only one. A realistic budget should include the following:

Expense

Typical planning amount

Notes

US$250 per night

Added to the base rate

Child aged 3–12

US$125 per night

Confirm the final age policy when booking

Road transfer

About US$75 per person, each way

Usually the most economical way to reach San Blas

Private flight

From US$700 to US$1,950 per aircraft, each way

Depends on aircraft, passenger count and total weight; taxes may be additional

Guna Yala entry tax

US$20 per non-resident

Paid locally; carry small US-dollar bills

Panama City hotel

Approximately US$150–US$300 per room, per night

A practical planning range for a comfortable or upscale stay

Our 2026 San Blas charter pricing guide explains the boat rates in more detail. You can also compare our private catamarans by guest capacity, cabin layout, air conditioning, Starlink and starting price.

The charter rate typically covers the private catamaran, professional captain and chef or first mate, meals, standard onboard beverages and water toys. Air-conditioning arrangements and beverage packages vary by vessel, so they should be confirmed for the chosen catamaran. See our current all-inclusive charter details before booking.

Example: A Five-Night Trip for Four Adults

A useful planning example is four adults sharing a private catamaran for five nights:

  • Catamaran from approximately US$2,500 per night: US$12,500

  • Return road transfers at US$75 per person each way: US$600

  • Guna Yala entry tax: US$80

  • One or two Panama City hotel nights: approximately US$300–US$600

  • Travel insurance: approximately US$200–US$600, depending on coverage

  • Crew gratuity at 5–15%: US$625–US$1,875

  • Local cash allowance: approximately US$100–US$300

The estimated total is therefore approximately US$14,400–US$16,550, excluding international flights. Choosing a private flight rather than the road transfer would increase the budget, but it reduces the journey from several hours by road and boat to an approximately 40-minute flight from Panama City.

At the midpoint—around US$15,000—the exchange-rate table above shows why currency movements can make such a substantial difference.

How to Reduce Currency and Payment Costs

  1. Request the exact dollar total. Compare a complete written quotation rather than converting only the nightly base rate.

  2. Check the live exchange rate before each payment. A rate seen in an article or search result may already have changed.

  3. Compare the provider’s rate and fees. Banks, cards and transfer services can add foreign-exchange margins even when they advertise no separate fee.

  4. Avoid unnecessary double conversion. Paying from reais to euros and then to dollars, for example, can create two exchange spreads.

  5. Budget for card and international-transfer charges. The mid-market conversion in this article is an illustration, not necessarily the rate delivered by a bank.

  6. Do not attempt to predict the market. If the trip is affordable at today’s rate, staged payments can reduce the risk of converting everything on a single unfavorable day.

Is Now a Good Time to Book San Blas?

For many international travelers, Panama is more affordable in their home currency than it was during recent periods of exceptional dollar strength. The improvement is particularly meaningful for travelers using British pounds, Brazilian reais, euros, Swiss francs, Australian dollars, Mexican pesos and Colombian pesos. Canadian travelers currently see a smaller—but still useful—advantage.

Exchange rates alone should not decide a vacation. Flight availability, travel dates, the right catamaran and the number of guests remain more important. But when the dollar is favorable, it can create an opportunity to book a better boat, stay longer or choose a more comfortable transfer without increasing the original home-currency budget.

Catamaran Adventures San Blas has operated private, fully crewed charters exclusively in the San Blas Islands since 2012. We are direct operators—not a charter agency—and can quote the catamaran and transfers together so you can see the complete cost before making a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Panama use the US dollar?

Yes. Panama’s balboa is fixed one-to-one with the US dollar, and US banknotes are used for everyday payments. Most tourism services, including private catamaran charters, are priced in US dollars.

Does a weak dollar make Panama cheaper for Europeans?

Yes, when the euro strengthens against the dollar. At approximately US$1.164 per euro, a US$15,000 trip costs about €12,883. When the euro was near US$0.96 in September 2022, the same trip cost approximately €15,625.

Is Panama currently cheaper for Brazilian travelers?

It is considerably cheaper in reais than during the dollar’s brief December 2024 peak. A US$15,000 trip is approximately R$77,786 at R$5.19 per dollar, compared with R$101,250 at R$6.75 per dollar.

Does a weak US dollar help Canadian travelers?

Only if the Canadian dollar strengthens against the US dollar. The current advantage is more modest than it is for several other markets: approximately 6% compared with the brief Canadian-dollar low of February 2025.

Are international flights also cheaper when the dollar weakens?

Not necessarily. Airline prices depend on the departure country, route, demand, fuel costs, season and the airline’s pricing currency. The clearest benefit applies to expenses actually priced in US dollars after arriving in Panama.

Can I pay for a San Blas charter in euros, pounds or reais?

The charter quotation is established in US dollars. The amount charged in another currency depends on the selected payment method, its exchange rate and any applicable fees. Ask for the current payment options before transferring funds.
