The Caribbean's Record-Breaking Sargassum Crisis: Why San Blas Is Different

Imagine arriving after months of planning your Caribbean vacation, only to find beaches covered in meters of brown seaweed, a strong rotten egg smell in the air, and tractors working from sunrise trying to clear the shoreline.



While destinations like the Mexican Caribbean, parts of the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Florida, and many eastern Caribbean islands now prepare for annual sargassum invasions, San Blas continues to offer something increasingly rare: crystal-clear water and white sandy beaches without sargassum.


What is Sargassum?

Sargassum is a naturally occurring floating brown seaweed that lives in the Atlantic Ocean. In the open ocean it plays an important ecological role, providing shelter for fish, turtles and many marine species.

The problem begins when enormous quantities drift ashore.


Over the past decade, scientists have identified the formation of what is now known as the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, stretching thousands of miles across the tropical Atlantic. Every year, millions of tons of seaweed drift toward Caribbean coastlines, with 2026 expected to be among the largest seasons ever recorded.

Once the seaweed reaches the beach, it begins to decompose, producing hydrogen sulfide gas, the characteristic rotten egg smell, and creating unpleasant conditions for visitors.

From the Open Atlantic to Caribbean Beaches

The diagram below, produced by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), illustrates how sargassum naturally forms in the Atlantic Ocean before ocean currents transport it toward Caribbean coastlines.


In the open ocean, floating sargassum provides an important habitat for fish, turtles and countless marine species. The problem begins when unusually large quantities drift ashore, where they accumulate on beaches and start to decompose.


Today, the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt stretches thousands of miles across the tropical Atlantic. Depending on winds and currents, enormous mats of seaweed can wash onto beaches throughout the Caribbean, overwhelming local cleanup efforts and affecting tourism, marine activities and charter operations.



A Growing Problem Across the Caribbean

Many destinations now dedicate millions of dollars every year simply to remove sargassum from their beaches.


British Virgin Islands

The BVI has experienced increasingly frequent sargassum arrivals in recent years. Popular anchorages and beaches occasionally become clogged with floating seaweed, making swimming less enjoyable and forcing charter operators to adjust itineraries depending on wind and currents.


For charter companies, this means constantly monitoring conditions and moving guests away from affected anchorages whenever possible.


Bahamas

Many islands in the Bahamas remain beautiful, but eastern-facing beaches regularly experience heavy accumulations during sargassum season.


Hotels often employ cleanup crews every morning before guests wake up, but strong winds can quickly cover beaches again later the same day.


Florida

Florida's Atlantic coast and the Florida Keys now experience seasonal sargassum almost every year.

Scientists estimate that severe sargassum years could cost Florida billions of dollars through tourism losses, cleanup costs and health impacts associated with decomposing seaweed.

Many visitors are surprised to discover that beautiful marketing photos taken just weeks earlier no longer resemble the beaches they find upon arrival.


Mexico and the Eastern Caribbean

Perhaps nowhere has the impact been more visible than along Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum frequently deploy heavy machinery before sunrise to clear beaches.



Large hotels employ dozens of workers every day trying to stay ahead of the incoming seaweed, while smaller businesses often struggle to keep their beaches usable.


Similar scenes have become increasingly common across islands such as Barbados, Saint Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua and many others.


How Sargassum Affects Charter Vacations

For hotels, sargassum is already a challenge.


For sailing charters, it creates even more operational difficulties.


Large floating mats can:

  • Make anchorages less attractive.

  • Reduce water clarity for snorkeling.

  • Wrap around dinghy propellers.

  • Affect swimming directly from the yacht.

  • Create unpleasant odors near affected shorelines.

  • Force captains to alter carefully planned itineraries.

While experienced crews adapt as best they can, nature often dictates where they can comfortably anchor.


Why Doesn't San Blas Have This Problem?

This is one of the questions we receive most often.


After operating exclusively in San Blas since 2012, we have never experienced a sargassum event affecting our sailing charter areas.


There are several reasons why San Blas is different.


Unlike many Caribbean destinations that face the Atlantic directly, the San Blas archipelago consists of 365 low-lying islands protected by extensive coral reefs. These reefs act as natural barriers, reducing wave energy and limiting the amount of floating sargassum that can penetrate into the shallow lagoons where we spend our cruises.

The prevailing trade winds and local current patterns also tend to carry offshore floating sargassum away from the islands rather than concentrating it inside the archipelago.


The result is exactly what guests expect to find:

  • Crystal-clear turquoise water

  • White sandy beaches

  • Excellent snorkeling visibility

  • No tractors cleaning beaches

  • No unpleasant odors

  • No brown seaweed covering the shoreline


After thousands of charters and welcoming guests from around the world, this remains one of San Blas' greatest natural advantages.


One of the Caribbean's Best-Kept Secrets

Ironically, many travelers searching for "the Caribbean" automatically think of destinations that are now battling annual sargassum seasons.


Few realize that San Blas offers everything they were hoping to find:

  • Hundreds of untouched islands.

  • No mass tourism.

  • No cruise ships.

  • Warm, calm waters.

  • Incredible snorkeling.

  • Private beaches.

  • Indigenous Guna culture.

  • And remarkably, no history of sargassum affecting our cruising grounds.

As more Caribbean destinations struggle with increasingly severe seaweed seasons, San Blas continues to deliver the postcard-perfect experience that visitors imagine when they dream of a tropical sailing vacation.


Should You Worry About Sargassum When Booking San Blas?

Simply put: no.


Since we began operating catamaran charters in San Blas in 2012, we have never had to cancel or modify an itinerary because of sargassum.


While no destination can make absolute guarantees about future ocean conditions, San Blas has consistently remained outside the areas affected by the large seasonal sargassum invasions that now impact much of the Caribbean.


That means you can focus on what really matters:

Swimming in crystal-clear water, snorkeling vibrant coral reefs, relaxing on deserted white-sand islands, and enjoying one of the last truly untouched sailing destinations in the Caribbean.
