Will the Kids Get Bored in San Blas?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask before booking a family catamaran charter and travelling with kids in San Blas.
The reality is that most children become completely absorbed in San Blas. Every day brings a different island, beach, anchorage and underwater environment. They can swim before breakfast, paddle to an island, snorkel around the boat, explore the beach, meet local children and watch fish or nurse sharks beneath the catamaran.
San Blas is not an amusement park, and that is exactly why it works so well for families. Children rediscover how entertaining nature, freedom and simple experiences can be.
Calm Water, Stable Catamarans and Safe Anchorages
Although San Blas is in the Caribbean, our sailing takes place behind the coral reefs that protect the archipelago.
The water inside the reefs is generally calm, shallow and clear, often feeling more like a huge natural swimming pool than open sea. Sailing distances between islands are also relatively short (30 minutes to 1.5 hour per day), so children spend more time swimming and exploring and less time travelling.
Catamarans are particularly suitable for families because their two hulls and wide platform reduce the side-to-side movement normally associated with a traditional sailing boat. Larger boats such as our Lagoon 52 feel especially spacious and stable, while the Neel 51 Trimaran uses three hulls to provide an exceptionally broad and balanced platform.

Dangerous animals are also extremely uncommon in the places where we swim and anchor.
The sharks most often seen near the catamarans are nurse sharks. These calm, slow-moving sharks feed mainly on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs from the seabed. They are generally uninterested in swimmers.
They sometimes approach the back of the catamaran when they detect food smells or small scraps in the water. Watching one swim beneath the platform often becomes one of the children’s favourite memories. We observe them calmly, give them space and never encourage children to touch or deliberately feed them.
As with any beach or swimming pool, children should remain supervised and follow the crew’s instructions.
Water Toys, Islands and Something New Every Day
Children rarely all want to do the same activity at the same time. One may want to snorkel, another may prefer a paddleboard, while an older child may want to use a electric sea scooter.
That is why the number of water toys onboard matters. A boat with only one kayak can quickly create waiting and frustration. A larger selection allows several children and adults to enjoy the water at the same time.

Leopard 50: 2 single kayaks, 1 transparent kayak, 5 stand-up paddleboards, 4 electric sea scooters, 4 electric kickboards and snorkelling equipment. The Leopard 50 also provides several separate spaces where children and adults can relax.
Neel 51 Trimaran: 2 single kayaks, 1 transparent kayak, 5 stand-up paddleboards, 4 electric sea scooters, 4 electric kickboards and snorkelling equipment.
Lagoon 52: 2 single kayaks, 1 transparent kayak, 5 stand-up paddleboards, 4 electric sea scooters, 2 electric kickboards, a floating pool and snorkelling equipment.
Fishing equipment is also available on catamarans.
Beyond the water toys, every island becomes a new playground. Children can swim from the catamaran, snorkel over coral, explore beaches, look for starfish without touching them, play football or volleyball ashore, fish with the crew and learn simple sailing skills.
Because every charter is private, the itinerary can follow the family’s rhythm. We can arrange shorter sailing periods, longer beach visits, relaxed mornings and quiet time after lunch.
Food, Space and Family Comfort
Children do not need to eat seafood or unfamiliar dishes at every meal.
Before departure, we ask about allergies, intolerances, preferences and foods the children will or will not eat. Our chefs can prepare simple family favourites such as pasta, rice, chicken, sandwiches, eggs, pancakes, fruit, potatoes and familiar breakfasts.

Space is equally important when travelling as a family.
Even our smaller catamarans provide a saloon, cockpit, foredeck, trampoline, cabins and swim platforms. As the boats increase in size, families gain more privacy and more separate areas for relaxing.
The Lagoon 40 and Lipari 41 work well for smaller families. The Lagoon 42 and Lagoon 450 provide more deck and cabin space, while the Salina 48, Leopard 50, Neel 51, Lagoon 52 and Lagoon 57 are particularly suitable for larger or multi-generational groups.
Extra areas such as flybridges, forward cockpits and wide lounges allow children to play in one part of the boat while parents relax somewhere quieter.
Meeting Guna Children and Discovering Different Values
A San Blas charter offers something that a conventional resort holiday cannot easily provide: genuine contact with another culture.
During suitable itineraries, families may visit Guna communities and see how island life differs from their own. Tigre Island is especially memorable because it is an active community with many local families and children.
Visiting children may have the opportunity to play football and interact naturally with Guna children. They may not share the same language, but a ball, a smile and the desire to play are often enough.

After the first day, most children are far more interested in jumping from the boat, paddling to the beach or looking beneath the water than asking for a tablet.
So, Will the Kids Get Bored?
Probably not.
San Blas gives children calm water, spacious catamarans, personalised food, abundant water toys, wildlife, cultural encounters and a new island to explore almost every day.
They are not simply passengers on their parents’ holiday. They become swimmers, paddlers, snorkellers, explorers, sailors and new friends to children living on islands very different from their own.
